“And, my gracious duke,
Be it so she will not here before
your grace
Consent to marry with Demetrius,
I beg the ancient privilege of
Athens.
As she is mine, I may dispose of
her—
Which shall be either to this
gentleman
Or to her death—according to our
law
Immediately provided in that
case.” (1.1.39-46)
Above: Egeus forcing Hermia to marry Demetrius
Egeus and his daughter, Hermia, have a conflict where
he wants her to marry Demetrius, although she loves Lysander. He obtains
permission to either make her marry Demetrius, or have her killed. She rebels,
and decides to plan to marry Lysander outside of Athens, where the law can’t
tell her what to do. This relationship between father and daughter is not a
healthy relationship.
